A real Christmas fairy tale

by Intuitive Designs

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Once upon a time there was a designer called Naomi who was very sad to notice that people were not sending greeting cards at Christmas time anymore. So she said: “I wish people would send us Christmas cards this year, just like in the old times”. She thought nobody was listening, but she was wrong because the fairy Lori Ann was there and she was committed to make Naomi’s dream come true. So Lori Ann got to work and she told all of the good fellow designer fairies to send a Christmas card to Naomi.

One Christmas evening, Naomi opened the mail box and what she found was tons of Christmas cards flying around, all of them addressed to her. She was so happy that she cried, and said to Koldo, “This must be the work of good fairy Lori Ann, I can see now why she was asking me recently about all of the fellow designer fairies that I knew…”

So this is a real story of good wishes and that good fairy dreams can come true. We think it looks really beautiful to see all of your Christmas cards together. Oh, and the background music is Koldo playing Christmas music on the harp.

Thanks to all of you, this Christmas has been very very special because of you!

Christmas Card

Here is the Christmas card that we sent this year. This year we have made a big change in the style and we have gone for a cartoonish and fun design. There is a reason for all this.

When we first thought about doing the new design for the Christmas greeting we decided to do it by using some of the design and illustration work that we have actually done during this year, like a sort of potpourri thing. So we looked at the archive and we found some elements that were just perfect for a Christmas theme.

Mailman Illustration

First, I decided to do a revision of the Businessman illustration that I originally designed for the Contact page of this site. So I practically disguised the mailman as a Santa. I thought it would be perfect to have him carrying a sack with presents and toys, instead of the mail sack in the original picture. And then I made a new suit for the man, stack a fake beard and mustache, and there you go! Ready to deliver.

Chrome Globe illustration

Then I also found very interesting to use these Globe illustrations that I had previously designed for commercial use. I thought it could be a nice way to express the concept of “world peace” and “unity” for the spirit of Christmas. So I decided to use one of the globes instead of a sack with presents: Santa bringing the world peace to the world. This is one of the different versions of globe illustrations that I did. It’s called “Chrome” because when I first did it we thought it looked just like the chrome effect, which happens to be the same typical texture effect in the Christmas balls. So I decided to turn the Globe into a huge chrome Christmas ball.

Trees Illustration

Finally, I found these pine trees that we lately did for the design of a web site in Montana. They fit in the style with the rest of the stuff I was using, so I decided to use them too. I really like the idea of recycling stuff in every sense of the word. This was a wonderful opportunity to greet the holidays to our clients with something that truly represents our work, so nothing better than our past work.

Intuitive Designs' Fancy Halloween Decoration and Evil Pumpkin

This year Halloween looks like it’s starting to become popular in Spain for the very first time: kids dressed-up in the streets, Halloween products on the shops, and TV commercials. Spain is a country that has always been reserved about sharing other countries’ holidays and traditions. Here we celebrate the dull Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints) and people usually visit the graves of their late relatives in the morning of the 1st of November.

The fact is that most of the people criticize these foreign traditions and they call them “American” in a derogatory manner. Probably because they just know the traditions from watching American movies, but nobody takes the little effort to sort out their origins. If they would do that, they would discover that these “American” traditions all come from Europe. In schools teachers tell the children how to get disguised and just teach them about the pumpkin carvings and witch paraphernalia, but they don’t tell them that Halloween is in fact a 2,000 year old pagan tradition called Samhain which comes from our ancestors, the Celtic druids. There is a wonderful research on the history of Halloween on this web site which we recommend if you want to know how everything started. So, nothing to do with Hollywood.
